Howard Schelde and Robert Kowalewski started their partnership
in 1968 as a Mr. Steak franchisee. As brother-in-laws, one from
Detroit, the other Chicago, they picked a spot halfway between the
two major cities to build their first Mr. Steak. Grand Rapids became
their new home.
As their business grew (consistently one of Mr. Steak's top
operators), they decided to branch out on their own—giving
them more opportunity to expand the menu, offer liquour, and
purchase higher quality meat.
By the mid-1980s there were 7 Schelde's Grille & Spirits. Yet,
with the advent of major chains flooding the market, it was decided
a better marketing advantage was to create individually unique
restaurants, as shown on the homepage of michinganmenu.com.
The two most popular Schelde's Grille & Spirits continued as unique
restaurants unto themselves. Those two units were the Petoskey and
Traverse City locations.
In 2004 Petoskey was converted to the popular Rio Grand
Steakhouse. Now Munson Avenue carries the sole banner.
Housemade soups, a fresh salad bar, quality steaks, and a variety of
menu choices keep Schelde's a popular destination for families
looking for good food guaranteed.
